Which claims can be checked?

When choosing a sustainable winery to visit, similar terms appear everywhere. Separate a verifiable status, a description of a practice and a future aim. An explanation becomes more useful when the producer says exactly what it applies to.

This guide is not a ranking. It offers a way to read different wineries’ descriptions and ask more precise questions during a visit.

Organic: examine the actual evidence

CBPAE provides information on registered organic operators and links to the national REGOE register. Check the specific business and its current documentation. An old directory entry does not answer every question about today’s production.

Regenerative: ask about actions and observations

I would ask what changed, on which plot, when and with what observed result. An ambition and a demonstrated outcome are different things. Photographs, work records and comparable observations can make the discussion more precise.

Cover crops illustrate this: the OIV describes potential benefits but also the need to account for water availability. A green photograph alone says little about whether a practice fits a particular plot.

Research as a starting point

The review “Vinecology” by Viers and colleagues connects viticulture and nature conservation at landscape level. It offers a useful question for exploring a winery: what role does the surrounding landscape play? It does not establish the effects of an individual practice at Terra IóN.

Use a tasting to ask about the work

A useful question invites an explanation. Ask the producer to show one decision in practice, including what remains uncertain or has not worked.

• Which change in the vineyard can visitors see?
• Which evidence is current, and what does it cover?
• Which observations are recorded over several years?
• Where do water, soil care and workload create trade-offs?
• Which question is the team still investigating?
